The Phonics Formula

Janis Crosby, M.S., C.C.C.S., president of ASP Associates, LLC and creator of THE PHONICS FORMULA, is a speech-language pathologist with over 20 years of public school experience. She has devoted much of this time to developing an understanding of reading acquisition. For ten years she has collected every piece of research, every reading program, old and new, every book and article on reading acquisition that she could find. Not only does she have a formidable library (ask her about her book shelves and filing cabinets), but it is all on the tip of her tongue.

Jan has worked for over 20 years with children of all skill levels. She is typically responsible for the identification, diagnosis and remediation of speech language issues for a population of 900 students, with caseloads averaging 50 students. She has developed many specialties over the years, but is most passionate about reading acquisition. Throughout her vast experience with learning challenged students, she has discovered the secrets to teaching reading. She began a crusade to bring reading acquisition training to any teachers willing to hear her. In fact, her approach was so successful, she was finally persuaded to publish it. In 1998, she teamed with a kindergarten teacher and published Focus on /F/onemes, a tremendously successful kindergarten reading and writing curriculum.

As the Focus on /F/onemes program became more widely used, Jan saw a need that wasn't being filled. Systematic phonics instruction has not been taught in so many years that many teachers have never received adequate training in it. What is worse, most good readers have internalized the rules of the English language, making it difficult for parents and teachers to revert to phonics when other methods of reading acquisition fail. The need to train masses of teachers in systematic phonics instruction quickly became Jan's focus.

This is where THE PHONICS FORMULA steps in. Jan knows that when the structure of the English Language is taught using systematic and direct instruction methodologies, all children can learn to read. THE PHONICS FORMULA was created to train parents and teachers to teach these lost skills.
